March 25, 2009 – Canterbury Wins Its First Yearbook Award
The 2008 Cougars Den Yearbook Staff has pulled off a Canterbury first by winning an award for its 2008 superhero-themed yearbook “Secret Identities.” The book won 4th place out of seven at the TAPPS Academic competition recently. The book was judged by a group of journalism high school students from El Paso. The yearbook will now advance to the State competition to be held in Austin the weekend of April 3rd. “The staff couldn’t be more excited,” said Eddie Medina, yearbook advisor, “It’s such a great validation for all the hard work and long hours the students spent on putting it all together. And we’re hoping for a stronger showing at State.”
The yearbook featured a comic book styled cover which showcased the school’s cougar mascot dressed in a variety of superhero costumes. The cover was illustrated by Medina who freelances as a comic book illustrator himself. It was digitally colored by renowned artist, Lisa Hutchinson. Hutchinson is the creator of the Christian themed best selling manga “Shelter of Wings.” “We were very fortunate to have someone of Lisa’s caliber and experience help out in creating the cover,” said Medina.
The staff has just completed work on the 2009 yearbook whose theme is once again a secret to be revealed in May. “I think this year’s book is alot better.” said Sydney Elliott, a member of the Cougars Den staff. No doubt, the staff set the bar high with its 2008 book. We’ll see in May if they were able to leap that hurdle with this year’s book.
Purchase forms for the 2009 yearbook are available on the school website and in each of the three school offices.
