Volleyball
The 2011 varsity team will have their sights on what the 2010 team accomplished…a State Championship! The 2010 Lady Cougars finished with an impressive game total of 108 wins and 13 losses. The team also posted a school record 18 wins and 0 losses in best 3 of 5 matches.
The 2011 team returns with five seniors, a junior and a sophomore from last years’ team. Returning for the Lady Cougars is two-time first team all state outside hitter, Vicky Bowens. Also, all district selection Kelsey Steuben will return as the Lady Cougars setter, having to pick up the slack of first team all-state captain setter Caitlin Pierce (Baylor University). All district selection Blasé Saucedo will also return as middle hitter and is expected to be a huge factor in Canterbury’s offensive attack. Senior Vallery Mitchell is expected to replace OBU signee Kaitlyn Lucy at Libero while senior Emily Painter is also expected to see plenty of time in the back row. Junior Claire Metoyer is also returning from last years’ team and will move from MB to outside hitter and is expected to pick up where all-state Katy Fitzgerald left off…leading Canterbury with 16 kills in the state title game. Sophomore Samantha Bowens is the final returner from the 2010 team and will see time at setter and right side hitter.
Joining the 2010 returners will be junior defensive specialist Maddie Wright and two freshmen starters…Makenzie Hanna (Middle Blocker) and Aeriel Horton (Outside Hitter / RS Hitter). Maddie will share time in the back row while both of the freshmen are expected to be immediate impact players. In the first few games of 2011 the team is currently 3-0 in match play (9-0 in games) and has been led in scoring by both freshmen.
Scott Vaughan is returning for his 7th year as the Lady Cougars head coach, claiming state titles in 2005 and 2010. Both Coach Kim Shelton and Coach Jeff Ellis will return as assistant coaches from 2010 championship team.
