Lower School - Grades K through 5

In line with our school's mission, Lower School helps to foster a love of learning that should continue throughout a student's academic career. The environment is nurturing and allows each student to maintain an appropriate individual identity. Linked to the love of learning pillar of our mission statement is preparation for college. With this in mind, our curriculum has been crafted so that students are challenged with above grade level work that causes them to explore, and soar above that which is average. Students also acquire critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Spanish is a part of our core curriculum instruction. Students also participate weekly in our fine arts program, physical education program, and a variety of clubs that help keep them academically focused while having lots of fun. Lower School students may participate in the Private School Interscholastic Association Competition (PSIA), which provides district and statewide academic exposure.

At the 3-5 grade levels, students enjoy departmentalized instruction. Students rotate to classes throughout the day, which promotes age appropriate responsibility. Extracurricular activities include a school choir, art club, and The Dallas Morning News Stock Market Game, to name a few. Our science classroom includes a laboratory that is quite advanced. Two computer labs are strategically located in the Elementary School building that includes internet accessibility.

Students attend chapel daily, and participate in service projects which help them to grow, both spiritually and socially. Our teachers are degreed, and demonstrate a passion for teaching, with a respect of different learning styles and intelligences. They also work to create a relationship with parents that facilitates the exchange of information necessary to ensure the child's progress.

Canterbury provides a safe and secure environment in which students grow in both autonomy and the ability to work and play together. Our diverse student population reflects our world. Come and grow with us.
